For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Hebrews 10:1
In Hebrews chapters 9 and 10, the writer is comparing the Old Testament law to the new covenant brought by Jesus, His death, and superiority to the sacrifices done by the priests. Here, the author brings attention to the fact that Jesus is superior to the law stating that the law was meant only to be a shadow of His coming, for He was the only perfect sacrifice that could be permanent. The sacrifices made by the priests had to be offered every year and were only meant to be a reminder of the fact that they were sinners.
When you stand in the sun, you either have a shadow behind you or before you, depending on which way you are standing. If the sun is behind you, the shadow is before you. If the sun is in front of you, the shadow is behind you.
How like Jesus that is! If the SON is before us and we are looking forward to him, the shadow, or our old life of doing things in our own strength, is behind us. If we put Him in a place behind us, the shadow, or living our own way of life is before us and we are focused on that.
Where is the Son in your life today? Are you focused on Him with Him before you and the old things behind you, or are you still fighting to have control of your own life and looking to the shadow with Him behind you?
The only way we can have a truly joyful, peaceful life, is to make sure that the Son is before us and we are focused on Him.
